The Boy on the Moor. Oh, it is eerie to walk across the moor, When it teems with heather smoke, When the mists swirl like phantoms And the vine hooks onto the bush, Under every step a spring bubbles up, When it hisses and sings from the crevice!- Oh, it is eerie to walk across the moor, When the reeds crackle in the breeze! The trembling child holds the book tight And runs, as if he were being hunted; The wind whistles hollowly over the plain- What is rustling over there by the hedge? It is the ghostly digger's assistant, Who squanders the master's best peat; Hu, hu, it breaks through like a mad ox! The little boy ducks fearfully. From the bank, stumps stare out, The pine nods uncannily, The boy runs, ear strained, Through giant stalks like spears; And how it trickles and crackles in there! That is the unhappy spinner, That is the cursed Spinnlenor', Who turns the reel in the reeds! Onward, onward! Just keep running, Onward, as if it wanted to catch him! Before his feet it bubbles up, It whistles under his soles, Like a ghostly melody; That is the unfaithful fiddler, That is the thieving fiddler Knauf, Who stole the wedding coin! Then the moor bursts, a sigh comes Forth from the gaping cave; Woe, woe, there cries the damned Margret: "Ho, ho, my poor soul!" The boy jumps like a wounded deer; Were the guardian angel not near, His bleaching bones would be found late By a digger in the moor's mire. Then gradually the ground firms up, And over there, beside the willow, The lamp flickers so homelike, The boy stands at the crossroads. He breathes a deep sigh, back to the moor He still casts a shy glance: Yes, in the reeds it was terrible, Oh, it was eerie on the heath. Annette von Droste-Hülshoff

This is a great highlight. The picture looks as if it was taken in winter. On the bike tours that I occasionally repeat, I also have places where it is a bit difficult to find a way with the bike. I passed this spot four days ago, on 24.6.26, on my bike tour from Kummerfeld via Borstel-Hohenraden to Ellerhoop.

very good to ride even in warm weather. Always fresh air. For road bikes, the surface is a bit strenuous.

Beautiful landscape in the Bilsbek lowlands. I am adding two pictures of a fallen tree blocking the path. As I looked around, two other cyclists arrived. The man of the two energetically grabbed his bike and lifted it over the branches. Afterwards, he helped his partner and then me. I am adding more pictures, showing the path that leads across a meadow, a dirt path and a proper bridge. Between the dirt path and the proper bridge lies a wooden bridge without a railing. It is a great highlight to meet such helpful cyclists!
