The Church of St. Kilian in Hallstadt is the Catholic parish church and a prominent landmark of the town. Its history dates back a long way: as early as around the year 800, a wooden church is said to have stood on this site. The present-day three-aisled late Gothic hall church made of ashlar masonry was built in sections between 1450 and 1478. It has a short, recessed chancel with ribbed vaulting and a 5/8 apse in the east. The four-storey tower is located north of the chancel. Although the church looks simple from the outside, it surprises inside with its rich furnishings. The high altar dates from 1732 by Leonhard Gollwitzer, the side altars from the mid-18th century and the pulpit from 1669. A special feature of the church is its high church roof, which used to serve as a granary in times of need. In 1933, the hall nave was extended by two bays to the west. The parish of St. Kilian is a lively community with around 5650 Catholics, which is closely linked to social life in Hallstadt.
