Caño Negro River Bike Crossing

Highlight • River

Some of the fellow riders told me that they didn't ride south side of the Arenal Lake circle because of inability to cross Cano Negro.
I did ride this road twice and it is my favourite area in CR. Please do not give up on trying!
First time I did it with organised group and support vehicle, west to east. We made it over the river with just the bikes but SAG van got stuck in the middle of the river. While waiting for the van, night rolled in. We had to continue with the moon light and fireflies showing us the way. It was unforgettable! Van waited for big truck to pull him out.
Second time, I did it by myself, fully loaded, east to west. It was end of January.
From the banks it looks scary, fast and big, but don't get discouraged. It's all in the head.
You have to unload the bike and make multiple trips over the river!
At the deepest it's around 60cm but it's fast with big rocks on the bottom. With hands full of stuff, You can easily lose your balance so take it easy and double check every step. Water is refreshing.
That section is only 10-15m wide, the rest is easy and manageable no problem.
The rest of the south lake route has 4 more river crossings but they are all easy and don't require bike unpacking.
Hope that you make it over there and see why I love it so much.
Happy Riding!

Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve Long Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This is the longest way you can choose there in the national park. For hikers only to be recommended. He is as good as hardly overcrowded. Most "touris" opt for the shorter routes there. The trail was extremely muddy on my day so I strongly recommend ankle-high shoes. My alpine hiking boots were full to the stop. Unfortunately, I can not judge the best way to go, because it was pretty foggy with me, but there were two viewpoints to watch and I think they are not standing there for free, with a clear view

Coopelados R.L. Coffee Cooperative

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

It's in the valley of Rio Canas surrounded by tick forest and coffee plantations spread all over the surrounding mountains. Coopelados R.L. is the local coffee coop that manages all production in the area. Friendly people at the office will offer you to sample their products and take you to the tour of the facilities (all free). After seeing all the steps of the production you will have opportunity to purchase coffee right out of the roaster. Cannot be any fresher! Price 2$ for 250g bag. As a long distance biker I try to keep weight to the minimum but I couldn't resist. I was riding with 3 bags next 2 weeks.
There is only one, sorry, two problems. To get there! Also to get out!
Road is soooo bad and steep that, after I fell/side slipped few times, I decided to walk bike down the hill and latter up the hill. I think I mentioned that it is in the valley.
We wouldn't be on these trips that something like this will stop us of doing what we love. Explore the World!
Happy Riding

Arenal Ascent

Highlight • Volcano

First part is quite easy (constructed stairs), but worth it for the beautiful views. From the lava fields it gets harder, there is no real path visible anymore, but the lava blocks are a worthy challenge.

Beautiful tranquil cloud forests and in complete contrast to the other forests in Costa Rica.

The Black River has changed; it now curves, not in a straight line as it used to. The flow is somewhat choppy; proceed with caution.
