Hiking in volcanic regions can be influenced by weather conditions. Generally, dry seasons offer clearer paths and better visibility. However, temperatures can be high, so early mornings or late afternoons are often preferred. During rainy seasons, paths might become slippery due to ash and loose rock, making difficult trails even more challenging. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out.
The primary attractions along León's hiking trails are the geological features themselves. You'll be exploring active and dormant volcanoes, their craters, and vast ash fields. The routes offer unique insights into volcanic activity and provide panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes shaped by these powerful natural forces.
Given the rugged and often exposed volcanic terrain, it's crucial to wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Layers of clothing are recommended to adapt to changing temperatures, and sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) is essential due to potential lack of shade. Carrying plenty of water is also vital, as volcanic areas can be very dry.
