Who can say more about this landmark? Always great to discover such a landmark. Unfortunately there is far too little to read about it on the "World Wide Web".

November 13, 2023, Via Nova Memorial

There is a monument to the Via Nova and a bench to relax on. The VIA NOVA (Latin for 'New Way') is a newly created European pilgrimage route in July 2004 that does not have a specific destination, but rather combines old pilgrimage routes. The VIA NOVA connects Weltenburg/Kelheim, Bogen in Bavaria, Příbram in the Czech Republic and St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut with three main routes and a few side routes. On September 5, 2010, the Czech Republic was connected to this pilgrim route network for the first time with the 250 km long section from Vilshofen to Příbram. This path is not new either, but goes back to an old pilgrimage route, which has hardly been used since the Second World War and has only been used more regularly by pilgrims in recent years. In 2014, the European Pilgrimage Route was extended via Aufhausen (LK Regensburg) to Weltenburg Kelheim. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_Nova

The old pilgrimage route "Uttobrunner Staffel with Stations of the Cross in Metten" was blessed after several years of restoration by Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer in March 2021 (had already been planned for 2020).

Opposite the monastery in Metten is the "Fontanella" ice cream parlor. It is worth taking a break to enjoy the very good ice cream in the monastery garden.

You can take a break here on the benches! Bavarian beer king "Gambrinus" This "Gambrinus figure" was designed by the architect and sculptor Professor Ludwig Foltz around 1840 on behalf of the then lord of the castle, Count Armansperg. Foltz first made a plaster model, which is kept in the foyer of the Egger castle. The statue sitting here was created around 1850 by the local stonemasons paying off their debts at the Schlosswirt with a hammer and chisel on a granite block. It is a work from the era of romantic historicism - and an example of the high level of art created by the local stonemasons at the time. After around 40 years in exile, our "Gambrinus" was brought back to his home in July 1994 by the current castle owner, Honorary Consul Georg Luitpold HartI, in cooperation with the Bernried community and the Egger associations.
