The church was built in 1715 on the site of the old church that had burned down in 1712 and was consecrated in 1716. In the last years of the GDR, the church fell rapidly into disrepair and was closed in 1980. The organ was no longer usable and the tower clock no longer worked. Repairs began in 1986. On February 28, 1990, the church tower collapsed onto the roof of the nave during Hurricane Wiebke. It wasn't until 2002 that the tower was rebuilt and re-tiled along with the nave roof. The mechanical tower clock was reconstructed, and the bells could be rung again.

The Leipzig graphic artist Erich Gruner (1881 to 1966) created the "Double M" in 1917 as a symbol of the Leipzig Trade Fair. The logo is present in the city as an oversized, drive-through entrance gate to the Old Trade Fair on Prager Strasse, on the trade fair tower at the entrance to the new trade fair grounds in the Seehausen district in the north of Leipzig and as a striking rotating advertising logo on the Wintergarten high-rise in the city center.
