Ponitz Renaissance Castle

Highlight • Castle

Ponitz Castle was built around 1254 for the Lords of Ponitz. The castle was demolished in 1568-1575 and rebuilt as a Renaissance castle. After 1990 the castle was renovated. In 1568 the Abraham von Thumbsbirn family bought the castle for 30,000 Rhenish guilders from Heinrich von Ende. The later lord of the castle Wolfgang Conrad von Thumbsbirn (1604 - 1664) was one of the founders of the Peace of Westphalia. The former lowland castle, in its function as a city fortress, was located in the northeastern part of Zwickau's old town, just a few dozen meters from the Zwickauer Mulde River. A pronounced moat and high walls, which were still standing until the 19th century, suggest that the castle was originally built as a moated castle.

First mentioned as Castrum Czwickaw, it was severely damaged in a city fire in 1403. Demolition and reconstruction followed in the subsequent years, and from 1587 to 1590 it was transformed into a stately Renaissance castle. From 1775 to 1962, it served as a prison. After its closure, the monument fell into disrepair and was only saved by a comprehensive restoration between 2006 and 2008. Since then, the Wettin castle has once again shone in its full glory. Among its most famous guests was Martin Luther, who preached at the castle on May 2, 1522. August Bebel and Karl May also served their sentences here. https://www.zeitsprungland.de/poi/schloss-osterstein

The Lower Castle is a closed ensemble of 19th century residential architecture. Today, the Lower Castle houses the museum, the textile workshop, the Greiz Information Centre, the music school and a café.

The Summer Palace combines three collection focal points under one roof. The art treasures of the Greiz Princely House, which were transferred to the Free State of Thuringia as part of a settlement in 1921 as the “Foundation of the Elder Line of the House of Reuss”, have been accessible to the public since 1922. This includes, on the one hand, the court library and, on the other hand, the copper engraving collection. Starting from a considerable collection of historical caricatures, the “Greizer SATIRICUM” was founded in 1975 and thus a planned collection of contemporary caricatures on a museum level.
