The sharp-edged outlines deliberately set by the creator of this lion statue - Xavier Veilhan (born 1963) - contrast strongly with another modern work of art in Bordeaux: the woman's head "Sanna" created by Jensa Plaume with its somewhat elongated form, but soft and gently flowing contours. A Roman relic, not from the Gauls and certainly not a palace. It was probably more of an arena for sometimes bloody festivals in front of 15,000 spectators.

The Green Lake is a body of water about twenty kilometers from Bordeaux in the town of Canéjan. Fishing on this 7.5 hectare body of water is possible with a fishing license. Many species of fish are well represented in Lac Vert, including pike, smallmouth bass, carp or roach. The local fishing club regularly organizes trout releases.

The passengers of pleasure boats (still) insist on a short route between the bar, the shopping area and the cabin and port cities are paying a lot for this. Bordeaux solved the problem with a lifting bridge, not inexpensive, but elegant and with four pylons, each 77 m high, impressively designed as a “gateway” to the city. Even large passenger ships can fit under the 117 m long, 2,500 t middle section of the roadway when it is raised by a maximum of 53 m.

You can explore the Atlantic coastline, including the iconic Dune du Pilat, vast pine forests within the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park, serene lakes and rivers, and the world-renowned vineyards of areas like Saint-Émilion and Médoc. The Gironde Estuary also offers rugged, birdlife-rich environments.
Yes, Gironde has over 1400 easy hiking routes perfect for beginners or those looking for a relaxed walk. Many trails around lakes, such as the Longarisse - Lacanau Lake Loop, offer gentle terrain and beautiful scenery. The Forêt de Migelane also provides accessible trails, some even suitable for strollers.
While Gironde is generally known for its gentle terrain, there are over 120 more difficult routes for experienced hikers. These trails might feature longer distances or slightly more varied elevation, often found in areas with rolling hills like the Terres de Montesquieu or the vine-covered slopes near the estuary.
For families, the Domaine des Lacs d'Hostens offers multiple trails around its five lakes, providing a safe and enjoyable environment. The Domaine de Certes Graveyron in Audenge also features several trails suitable for families, allowing discovery of salt meadows and migratory birds. Many forest trails, like those in Forêt de Migelane, are also well-suited for family outings.
Many natural areas and trails in Gironde are dog-friendly, especially in the extensive forests and along coastal paths. However, it's always best to check local regulations for specific nature reserves or protected areas, as some may require dogs to be on a leash or restrict access during certain seasons to protect wildlife.
Yes, Gironde offers a great selection of circular hiking routes, perfect for exploring without retracing your steps. Examples include the Lac Vert Loop, which takes you around a tranquil lake, or the Carignan-de-Bordeaux Loop, offering vineyard views.
Beyond the natural beauty, you can discover numerous attractions. Highlights include the UNESCO-listed Citadel of Blaye along the estuary, the stunning Pilat Dune on the coast, and historic châteaux in the vineyard regions. The Loop of the Teich bird reserve is excellent for wildlife spotting.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars from over 5000 reviews. Hikers often praise the region's diverse landscapes, from the peaceful lake environments to the expansive coastal views, and the well-maintained trails that cater to all abilities.
Yes, some trails, particularly those closer to urban centers like Bordeaux, are accessible via public transport. The GR Bordeaux Métropole, a 160 km route encircling the city, connects 17 municipalities and is designed to be accessible, offering a mix of urban greenways and natural spaces.
Absolutely. Gironde is famous for its vineyards, and many trails wind through prestigious appellations. The Saint-Émilion area offers routes that blend wine heritage with rural paths through vineyards and limestone hills. The Terres de Montesquieu also features half-day hikes through vineyards and woods, often passing historic châteaux.
Gironde offers pleasant hiking conditions for much of the year. Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild temperatures and beautiful scenery, especially in the vineyards during harvest. Summer is great for coastal and lake walks, though it can be warm, while winter provides a quieter experience, particularly in the forests, with fewer crowds.
