Škarlina Canyon Nature Park

Highlight (Segment) • Canyon

Today's walk took us through the Škarline Nature Park near the village of Brtonigla.
The visit of the gorge I do not recommend right after rain, on Saturday was heavy rain and we had the "pleasure" on pretty muddy ways to go, always slipping in expectation, especially fun in two places where ropes are appropriate, which I thank that the whole back did not get a mud pack, it was very slippery! Again and again you have to cross the riverbed and despite much rain is on the third day after this no problem and to our surprise in the last third of the gorge, the riverbed is completely dry.

Further information about the Nature Park and interesting destinations for hiking in Istria can be found on the website izletipoistri.com/2013/05/04/skarlinski-kanjon

By the way as info; at our starting point of the whole hike (komoot.de/tour/55839141?ref=wtd), the car park in Brtonigla is an information board for the bikers attached. On the website, istria-bike.com/de/routen/interaktive-strecken, enthusiastic bikers can find GPS data for all over Istria. Unfortunately for hiking tours is not so well organized.

Momjan Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

Piazza San Servolo, Buje

Highlight • Historical Site

Very nice plaza in the old town of Buje (known as the "sentinel of Istria") with the belfry "Campanile di San Servolo" where you can get a nice view over the countryside for just 1€ per person. The tower was rebuild in 1480 after it was demolished in 1414 by an order of the Republic of Venice because of it's perfect function as watchtower.

Beneath there's the cathedral "Duomo di San Servolo" and the neoclassical palace "Scuola elementare e media". San Servolo (270 – 284) is the patron saint of the city Buje.

Parenzana Trail: Buje to Grožnjan

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful section of the Parenzana (former railway line that has been converted into a cycling and hiking trail) from Buje to Grožnjan. Parking at the start of the section in Buje. Rest areas at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the route. Shortly from Grožnjan you drive through an old railway tunnel. Gravel and gravel path; at times fine and at times quite coarse.

Kozlović Winery

Highlight • Structure

The Kozlovic winery, one of the 20 top wineries in Istria, is beautifully situated below the Momjan castle ruins. Similar to Roxanich in Motovun, the winery is highly endowed and has unusual wines to offer.

Wine tastings are subject to a fee and must be booked in advance, which unfortunately didn't work out this time. But you can still enjoy a few wines with cold dishes and if you beg something, a sip of a third or fourth variety. Indirect wine tasting, so to speak.

The dark white wines (orange in colour) are also unusual here.

The winery is extremely modern, the owner is rather down-to-earth, inconspicuous and personable. The location is simply beautiful on a slight rise, with the river valley and vineyards below and the castle on the hillside opposite.

Church of San Servolo

Highlight • Religious Site

San Servolo is the main church of Buje-Buie and one of the most important late Baroque monuments in Istria. Built on a previous Roman temple, it has monumental dimensions and is used only on the most solemn occasions, for masses on the occasion of the feast of San Servolo or for the organ festival which in itself is the cultural event par excellence. The church as we see it today was built in the second half of the 18th century, on the site of a three-nave Romanesque-Gothic church from the 13th century. Elements of the older building were inserted into the new one, so that they are still visible on the façade today.
The interior of the church is breathtaking.
The portal is richly decorated and is one of the most beautiful in Istria, while the unfinished façade also bears witness to the conditions during the late Venetian administration, the period in which San Servolo was built. The interior is breathtaking: the place is truly monumental and diaphanous, and the single nave is covered by a barrel vault. In addition to the seven richly decorated altars, the pulpit and the chandelier, the church's rich inventory includes the famous organ built in 1791 by Gaetano Callido.

It's a pretty rough road, but it rolls OK in places. I wouldn't want to ride on gravel on 40s again.

Unfortunately, the path is not always easy to find, especially towards the end of the gorge. There are a few trees lying on the path in the gorge and the signs are missing in some crucial places. In mid-June, the grass in the clearing at the lowest point of the tour is so high that it is difficult to see where to go next. Be sure to use mosquito spray; otherwise you will become a feast! In my opinion, you should not walk the path alone because you can slip very easily and also because you will be glad to have a helping hand in some sections.

The Brič winery is right on the Croatian border. Rebellious as we are, we crossed the border illegally on our first visit to enjoy the wines of this brilliant winery. On 36 hectares, the own, different grapes are nurtured and cared for. Winegrowing is ecological. The organically grown grapes are also handled with the utmost care during the harvest. You can also see the grapes. The wines are mostly aged in wood to give them a strong body. Nevertheless, the peculiarities of the terroir are not neglected. https://rebellion.wine/winzer-bric/
