July 28, 2026, U Čtyř Mamlasů (House of the Four Fools)

The Valentin Gerstbauer Foundation House (colloquially known as the House of the Four Mamlas) is a representative apartment building on Svobody Square in Brno. The Neo-Renaissance city house with arcades on all floors and a passage on the ground floor was built in 1899–1902 according to a design by German Wanderley (1845–1904) for the Valentin Gerstbauer Foundation. [1] The place owes its name to four monumental male statues, figures from ancient mythology – the Atlantes, who carry the weight of decorative columns on their shoulders (the ancient sea giant Atlas was a Titan who, as punishment, had to support the sky with his shoulders). The statues are the work of sculptor Johann Eduard Tomola. Various emotions are reflected on the faces of these sparsely clad men.

The core of today's building and the 63-meter-high tower were already created around 1240, after Brno had received city rights. In 1424 a chapel was added. The late Gothic entrance portal with the Brno coat of arms and the statue of Justice was created at the beginning of the 16th century by Anton Pilgram. Council meetings took place here from 1343 to 1935.

In its largely preserved form, the castle with its fortifications, including redoubts, moats, and bastions, dates from the mid-13th century. It was built as a Bohemian royal castle. The palace has a lattice tower. The early Gothic castle chapel of the Virgin Mary stands apart on the grounds of the former outer bailey. The 14th-century image of the Madonna of Veveří can be seen in the Diocesan Museum in Brno.[2] In 1802, the textile manufacturer Wilhelm von Mundy bought the castle with the associated lordship and the Ritschans estate. Johann von Mundy and his wife took up residence at the castle. Their son Jaromír von Mundy was born in Eichhorn. Later, it became the summer residence of Prince Gustav von Wasa-Holstein-Gottorp, whose daughter, the later Queen Carola of Saxony, spent her childhood years here. In 1896, the castle came into the possession of the English nobleman Maurice Arnold de Forest. His childhood friend, the later British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, visited Veveří Castle a total of three times. In 1908, Churchill, then Minister of Trade, and his wife Clementine spent part of their honeymoon at the castle. Since 1925, the castle has been state property (then Czechoslovak) and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. From 1942 to 1945, it served German troops as a Wehrmacht and SS hospital.

Not only the interior architecture is admirable. It is also worth visiting the Romanesque-Gothic crypt and the two towers, from which you have a magnificent view of the city.
