Masaryk Square, Karviná

Highlight • Settlement

The dominant feature of the square is undoubtedly the town hall with a Renaissance tower, the perspective of which is complemented by a historical cast-iron fountain in the middle of the square and a row of burgher houses with valuable stuccos and front decorations. At the northern entrance to the square, it is impossible not to notice the extensive Fryštát Castle with an elegant appearance in the Empire style from the 18th century.

Adam Sikora Park

Highlight • Natural

In May 1909, Adam Sikora bought a large plot of land (mostly uncultivated) on the left bank of the Olza River, near the border with Sibica, and handed it over to the organization Macierz Szkna. The call for help in construction was published in all Polish newspapers in Cieszyn and met with a wide response. In June and July 1909, the first ceremonies took place in the new complex. In 1911, a harvest festival was organized in the park and the tradition of organizing them in this place was continued in the following years. The works were not completed until 1912. In 1913, miniature Piast towers were erected in the park. At the beginning of World War I, the park served as an exercise area for the Cieszyn battalion of the Polish Legions. During World War II, the Sikora monument located in the park was destroyed by the Nazi occupiers, who changed the name of the complex to Freiheitspark.
In 1928, the electric lighting was replaced and a new entrance gate was built. In 1933, a dance and music pavilion was built in the park. In 1935, about 3,000 m2 of gardens and a residential house were purchased, which after the reconstruction was used as a restaurant. In 1938, the present entrance gate was built and the construction of the restaurant building was completed, it was officially opened on July 7, 1938 (the construction was carried out by the Brejžek a Beier company from Český Těąín).
In 1989, a plaque commemorating the founder of the park was unveiled.

Božena Němcová Park

Highlight • Natural

The favorite place for walks of Karvina inhabitants is the Park of Božena Němcova, which is the castle garden in Frystat, and thus in the old part of the city. In addition to romantic walks overlooking the Empire-style Friesland Castle, the locals would love to come here to enjoy the modern summer cinema.
The garden was established at the beginning of the 19th century as a typical English chateau park surrounding an impressive chateau building. The land belonged to the Larisch-Mönnich family, which had a clear influence not only on Karviná, but also a large part of the entire region, up to Ostrava and Opava. It is in the castle park that this noble family has its tomb.
There is also a marina in the park where you can rent a boat and swim on the blind leg of the Olza River. The ZOO corner with deer and water birds was created from the former castle stables. For families with children, a pleasant playground has been prepared here, which resembles an old Slavic settlement.

Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Orlová (Polish: Kościół Narodzenia Maryi Panny w Orłowej) is a Roman Catholic church in the Karviná district of Orlová-Město. It falls under the Roman Catholic parish in Orlová in the Ostrava-Opava diocese.
The first mention of the Orlov chapel dates back to 1223, and after the Benedictines came to Orlová at the beginning of the 13th century, there were already references to the establishment of the parish. In 1466, the former chapel was rebuilt into a church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. At the end of the 17th century, there was a partial Baroque reconstruction of the church, the most significant of which was the reconstruction of the originally wooden tower into a brick one. It was given a neo-Gothic appearance in 1903–1905, and on October 21, 1906, it was solemnly consecrated.
It is a three-nave building built in the neo-Gothic style. The chancel in the back of the church dates from the 15th century. He was threatened with extinction several times due to undermining. The church together with the access staircase equipped with statues is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

Former shooting range

Highlight • Historical Site

It was issued by the Cieszyn Rifle Society in 1882. It replaced the old building at ul. Jana Michejda (in the Polish part of Cieszyn), used since the founding of the Society in 1795, which turned out to be too small for its needs. The Shooting Society (Schützengesellschaft) was founded by Cieszyn townspeople who referred to the tradition of the so-called Fowler brotherhoods, in which, since the Middle Ages, their shooting skills were practiced while defending the city walls. The members of the Society received the permission of the authorities to organize shooting competitions, and the first of them was held on April 24, 1796, on St. George. In 1802, the Society bought the property from Fr. Leopold Jan Szersznik, a garden with buildings in Frysztackie Przedmieście, which it had already leased. The official opening of the "New Shooting Range", because that was the name that clung to it, was held on October 22, 1882 by Archduke Albrecht Habsburg, who arrived especially for this ceremony. On this occasion, a shooting competition was organized, which was won by Albert Blumenthal and the archduke ranger Reidl. Eight years later, in 1890, the shooting range was expanded to include extensions containing a restaurant, a dome room and apartments. At the same time, the facade of the building facing the street was unified in style. The reconstruction project and the construction works were carried out by Ludwik Kametz's company. The shooting range was designed as a classicist building with a one-story central body, covered with a domed roof and two one-story wings adjacent to it. The facade is decorated with rustication stripes and rich cornices. On the ground floor there is still a representative room with semicircular windows and eclectic stucco. Behind the building there was a spacious garden, used for competitions and shooting games. After World War I, the Society continued its activities, but in an increasingly limited form due to the division of the city. It ceased to exist after 1945. In 1947, the "Children and Youth House" was placed in the former Strzelnica, now transformed into the "Strzelnica" Cultural and Social Center (Kulturní a společenské středisko "Střelnice").

Pierwsi piwowarzy żywieckiego browaru pochodzili z Cieszyna.

Ultimate Defense Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

The tower was erected in the second half of the 13th century and was one of the important defenses of the upper castle. It was built of stone in the form of a cylinder, the diameter of which was 12 meters, the walls were 4.2 meters thick and about 24 meters high. The highest part of the tower was topped with a girdle and a wooden conical roof. The usable area of the interior was only about 3.6 m. There was a prison in the lower floor of the tower, and above there were living quarters and guard rooms.
In the 14th century, during the expansion of the castle, the tower was incorporated into the walls, becoming one of the corner towers. Later it fell into disrepair and was covered with a stone and earth embankment. In 1914, artificial ruins were erected on the embankment, thus creating a romantic spot in the park.
In the years 2001-2002, during the archaeological works carried out in the park, the remains of the tower were uncovered, and then its original appearance was restored. The ruins of the castle kitchen from the 16th century are visible next to the tower.

The Karviná square is a quiet place with the atmosphere of a small Czech town. Here you will find a historic town hall, colorful townhouses and several cozy cafes ideal for a break during the route. It is a good place to stop during the Iron Cycling Trail trip - you can replenish your supplies, have a coffee and feel the local atmosphere. The surfaces around the square are paved, but you can easily get there by road bike.
