Efforts to build a church in Poręba were initiated by the pastor of All Saints Parish in Pszczyna, Father Józef Kuczera. The church was to be built on the road from Pszczyna to Jastrzębie. During World War II, the so-called Death March of prisoners from German concentration camps took place along this road. Therefore, the Auschwitz martyr Maximilian Maria Kolbe was chosen as the parish's patron saint. Construction began on November 2, 1981. The church was consecrated by Bishop Herbert Bednorz on May 15, 1983, and on the same day, a new parish was established, separated from the Pszczyna parish, encompassing the village of Poręba. At that time, the church was still in its shell stage. Over time, the floor was laid, pews purchased, and stained glass windows installed. Religious education rooms and a rectory were built. The building was designed by engineer Antoni Turek, and the structural engineer was engineer Stanisław Gądecki. Rudolf Fojcik, and the designer and interior decorator was the artist-sculptor Zygmunt Brachmański.
