They have the floor plan of an irregular pentagon and surrounded the entire hill of the old town. The wall stones were made of local sandstone. There was a wooden castle here as early as the time of the first Piasts. A Gothic castle was built under the rule of Kazimierz Wielki. The sons of Kazimierz Jagiellończyk stayed in the castle together with their tutor, Jan Długosz. The Niepołomice Museum exhibits an important painting depicting Jan Długosz with one of the king's sons. In the 16th century, under the rule of the Lubomirskis, the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance residence. This residence was destroyed by the Swedes and Transylvanian troops. The castle was secured and partially rebuilt thanks to the efforts of PTTK (Polish Society for Tourism and Local Lore) members, especially the tireless Władysław Kowalski.
