Chochołów – Traditional Wooden Village

Highlight • Settlement

Called the pearl of Podhale, one of the 3 best preserved wooden villages on our TatraVelo El Clásico (with Osturňa and Vlkolinec /on an extra loop/ in Slovakia). 109 wooden houses are protected, most of them were built more than 100 years ago.
As wood was the most accessible material, local people used it to build their houses. Every year, before special religious occasions (like Easter or Corpus Christi), the houses are washed (with water and soap). As you can see, the houses are situated along one main road, in a line, which is typical for villages in Podhale and is an opposite of what you can find in some other regions where the villages would grow in a form of a circle and not a line.
Wooden houses were nothing special in Poland until 1950-ies, post-war time, especially in poor mountain regions where there was no industry; people lived (many times actually just survived) from what they grew on their small fields, some had sheep, many would work in forest. Here, as in many villages of Podhale almost everyone has a relative living in the USA. Many emigrated, escaping from the poverty; in Chicago you can find Podhale’s people organisation and even folk groups.
Unfortunately, the 17th century church didn’t survive until our times. At least, it was replaced by a beautiful neo-Gothic church - this actually makes us understand why so few wooden villages or churches survived; people desired solid, safer, more resistant and comfy houses or churches instead of small, old, wooden and also, (what seemed to them) poor ones. Chochołów survived thanks to the special protection zone which was given in the 1950-ies. From that time on, every change or work needs to be accepted by the protection office. For this reason, you will see some empty houses, too.
If not in rush, take a minute to locate house nº 24 - it was built from ONE TREE. So you can imagine how big the tree was :-)

Nowy Targ Market Square (Rynek)

Highlight • Settlement

I think that king Casimirus didn't predict that a privilege that he granted to this city in 1487 would continue until today… but it does. The Thursday markets are an over 500 years long tradition. But the New Market (the exact translation of the town's name) is even older than this, it was founded in 13th or 14th century. It is the biggest city of Podhale, actually, by saying “the city”, the locals simply mean Nowy Targ. It was re-founded by the Cistercians from the nearby Ludźmierz in the 13th century and the town, situated on a trade route from Silesia to Hungary quickly gained and retained its importance as a local centre of power and industry.

The town had quite a bad luck, it was damaged in many fires during its history, the last big one in 1784, hence the today's aspect is mostly a result of the reconstruction and a re-urbanisation that followed. By 1914 the city had a population of some 9.000 inhabitants, 15% of whom were Jewish. Hardly anyone of them survived WW2. After the 1945 several big factories were built, including a shoe factory (after 1989 its part turned into private factory - Wojas). At its best time it had 10.000 workers. The city keeps growing, attracting the people from the villages.

Nowy Targ Sightseeing - as the town was damaged by fires a number of times, what we can see today is generally not older than 19th century. Market Square (Rynek) features some old brick houses and also some ice cream shops, famous in the region. Apart from Rynek, there is St Catherine church, the oldest in Nowy Targ. Damaged and rebuilt many times, with a Baroque interior and many wooden replicas in other styles. The main altar from 1892 with a St Catherine painting. St Anne Church, a wooden church constructed in 15th century, later damaged,.changed and rebuilt many times. Located north from the centre, on a hill overlooking the town.

Cyclist Sheep Statue in Nowy Targ

Highlight • Monument

Krakow has a dragon, Trzebiatów has an elephant, Wrocław has gnomes, and Nowy Targ ... sheep! The sculptures made of aluminum attract the eyes of everyone who visits them in Nowy Targ, and at the same time remind of the rich history of the city and pastoral traditions in Podhale.

The heroes of the Sheep Trail are:
1. A sheep that rides a bike wears a highlander costume and a hat with a parzenica.
2. A sheep aviator sits in an airplane wearing a pilot hat with glasses.
3. A tourist sheep carries a backpack and a shepherdess in the company of a wolf.
You can find these cute animals by the bicycle path, the shelter at Łapsowa Polana and the airport. But that's not the end of the sheep's stories in this city. In Nowy Targ you will also see the famous bench with two "romancing" sheep located in the city park and the monumental sculpture "Dialog" on the market square. Who among you found them all?

Can there be anything interesting in a cave that’s 9 meters long, 5m deep?
Well, if you discover that it hides human objects as old as 150 000 year old - it definitely is. Cave lion, reindeer, cave hyena, woolly rhinoceros bones were found here. The human livings used to live here as early as the Stone Age, including the Neanderthals. Believe it or not, the World oldest boomerang was discovered here - it’s more than 32 000 year old, made of a mammoth tusk. The present day throw record is 66m long (using a replica, not the original one :) ). It didn’t come back.

Before discoveries in Obłazowa Cave all Carpathian Paleolithic sites were dated to the Late Paleolithic. No traces of earlier settlements were apparent. This situation has changed with the discovery of the Upper and Middle Paleolithic sequence in the Obłazowa Cave; it means discovering that people used to live here dozens of thousand years earlier than it was thought.
How could such an archaeological treasure remain unknown and so well-conservated? Well, the river sediments would make the riverbed grow higher and higher until literally closing the cave. No one knew what did it hide inside, until the 1985 works started and revealed great discoveries.
Apart from its archeological value, its geology and fauna are also interesting. For example, some High Tatras species grow here (because their seeds were brought down by the waters of Białka River).
If you have a moment, you can hike up Obłazowa rock (by the road); Kramnica lies on the other side of the river. They both stand up some 50 meters above the riverbed level offering splendid views, their walls were used by climbers until it was forbidden due to the Reserve rules.
There are plans to build an archeological museum here.

St. Elizabeth's Wooden Church in Trybsz

Highlight • Religious Site

This very small building was created nearly 500 years ago. As it happened with other wooden churches in the area, it was left without much care after a new church was built in the village, in 1903, which later led to the dismantling of its ruined tower twenty years ago. Luckily, the authorities noticed the uniqueness of the church and it's protection and conservation started.
There are beautiful 17th century polichromia inside with two curiosities worth your special attention: a painted 17 century panorama of the Tatra Mountains as seen from Trybsz hills and a visionary image of the Czorsztyn and Sromowce Lakes which were created only 350 years later (when the dams were built!).
