The oldest part of the city - on this side of the Wierzyca River, there used to be a farm and a village belonging to Piotr Święca. Shortly after he sold the local lands to the Teutonic Knights, in 1305, under the direction of Theodotus from Florence, they began to mark out the area for the development of a new settlement.
