Prabuty Town Square Fountain

Highlight • Monument

The Roland Fountain was constructed in Germany in 1900 to commemorate the death of Emperor William I. Interestingly, it was originally located in Berlin, but in 1929 it was purchased by the city authorities of Prabut and the place where it was placed and still stands today has become the main square in this town. The fate of the figure standing on the fountain pedestal is also interesting. It is the legendary knight Roland with the equally legendary sword in his hand - Durandal. For 45 years the knight stood in his place, but in 1945, immediately after the end of the war, he was stolen and the fountain pedestal was empty for the next 66 years, until 2011. It was then that the knight returned to his seat. It happened thanks to an artist from Gdańsk who made a new Roland and the fountain became complete again.

The location was made in 1294. At that time, there was a Teutonic manor here, as evidenced by sources from 1302. During this period, the existence of St. Sztum's hospital was recorded. The Spirit was probably located next to the castle chapel, which was attended by the faithful belonging to the parish in Postolin.
