Lake Sosina

Highlight • Lake

The Sosina Lagoon is located in the eastern part of Jaworzno, in the Pieczyska district. Its creation is related to the activities of the "Szczakowa" Underfoot Sand Mine, which supplied the sand selected here to Silesian mines in order to fill the so-called voids. The first 17 ha of the reservoir was created at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, and after a decade the reservoir was enlarged to its present size, amounting to about 50 ha. The lagoon has the shape of an elongated letter L; the average depth is about 2 m. In the middle of the basin there is a large island. The water in the tank is class II purity.
The Sosina Lagoon is one of the favorite places of summer recreation for the inhabitants of Jaworzno. The western shore of the lake was developed by the "Sosina" Leisure and Recreation Center. Holidaymakers can take advantage of the guarded bathing beach, sandy beach, sports and recreational equipment rental (pedal boats and kayaks), holiday houses, catering facilities and a camping site.

The unique mining district of NIKISZOWIEC

Highlight • Historical Site

A mining estate located in the south of Katowice, on the Industrial Monuments Route, an industrial tourist route. From January 14, 2011, recognized by ROZ as a Historical Monument. Nikiszowiec also won fourth place in 2011 in the plebiscite of the New 7 Wonders of Poland, organized by the "National Geographic Traveler". The estate was designed by the brothers Zillmann, Georg and Emil. It was established in the years 1908-1919 and 1920-1924. Erected next to the Nikisz shaft, which belonged to the "Giesche" mine (now KWK Wieczorek). The approval for the construction of the estate was given by the County Department on December 17, 1908, with the reservation that the newly built estate was to have full infrastructure; a Catholic church, schools, roads and a sewage system were to be built.
In the area of Nikiszowiec there is also the Wilson Shaft Gallery, the beginnings of which date back to 1826. At that time, there was a mining company, which consisted of two shafts (from 1935 their names were Wilson and Wilson II), Bathhouse, Cechownia, Zakład Przeróbczy , Headquarters and Sorting. There was also one of the stops of the "Balkan" railway, which served in the years 1920-1977 as a free means of passenger and goods transport. Currently, there is an exhibition space for the Wilson Shaft Gallery, established in 1998, which consists of: Mała Galeria, Medium and Large Gallery.
The estate appears in one of the films of K. Kutz's Silesian triptych "Salt of the Black Earth".

One of the greatest bike junctions in Katowice area providing useful map, few wooden tables and benches. Three of intercity bike routes are crossing there including #1 (red), #3 (blue) and #101 (black). #1 route leading north you can reach beautiful Three Pond Valley, University of Silesia and many landmarks of Katowice downtown. Going south route leads to Paprocany lake in Tychy, Duchal European Bisons Park in Pszczyna, Goczałkowice's Dam and finally Bielsko-Biała — capital of Beskidy Mountain Range. #3 route going east provides scenic route to historic district of Giszowiec, and going west to the city of Ruda Śląska. #101 route that starts nearby leads to the Murcki's Wilderness Forest, and then crossing the city of Bieruń providing the best way to reach Auschwitz Museum in Oświęcim.
