Until the end of World War II, it housed a 15th-century wooden statue of St. Gertrude, but the circumstances surrounding its disappearance are unknown. After the war, the chapel briefly housed the Regional Museum, and later the Art Education Center.

Today, the Gunpowder Tower has two entrances, one at ground level and the other at the height of the former defensive walls. Originally, only the latter existed, and access to the interior was only possible from the walls.
