The history of Manteigas is linked to the abundance of livestock and butter production, which gave rise to its name. It's a central location in the Serra da Estrela mountain range, known for its natural heritage, such as the Zêzere Glacial Valley, and its thermal springs, with sulphurous waters at CISE. Founded with its own municipality, the town has a rich cultural and ethnographic history, also standing out for its wool production (Burel Factory) and the beauty of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, making it a strategic point for exploring the mountains. 👍🥾

As the name suggests, this is a large hollow, an amphitheater sculpted by nature, where a lagoon lies that, on hot summer days, can disappear completely. Even so, the landscape remains stunning, imposing and filled with the overwhelming silence of the mountain.

The Lagoa do Peixão, sculpted by ice from ancient times, has an almost mystical aura. In spring, the spectacle becomes even more mesmerizing, with thousands of dragonflies dancing on the water, while tree frogs croak on the edge of the lake, composing a perfect natural symphony. The view from here is breathtaking. The imposing rocky peaks of Fragão do Poio dos Cães and Cântaro Gordo emerge on the horizon, reminding you of the ancient glaciers that once shaped this stunning landscape.

Here you can do a really nice small (approx. 3.5 km) circular hike, which is quite demanding (T3). Sure-footedness and good shoes are mandatory. The highlight is of course the jump into one of the waterfall pools of the Poco do Inferno.
