Depending on time of day, can be lots of traffic. Yet, all were polite and gave us plenty of room while passing.

Praia Grande, as hinted by the name, is the biggest beach in Porto Covo. It’s among the 41 beaches in the Alentejo coast awarded with the Blue Flag in 2023. It has a large car park, toilets, and a small beach bar/restaurant. Being somewhat less sheltered than the other beaches, the sea can be quite choppy depending on the weather conditions, so it’s great for surfing and body-boarding. But we’ve been to Praia Grande on several occasions where the sea was very smooth.

Its strong and regular waves ensure São Torpes Beach is one of the best for surfing to be found along the entire extent of the Portuguese coastline with a number of schools available for those wishing to learn this sport. Located right in the extreme north of the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park, São Torpes Beach covers a long stretch of sand occasionally punctuated by rocks with its sea a noticeable couple of degrees warmer than its neighbouring beaches.

Pretty beach. Nobody there mid-Feb. I had to push my bike up the hill, which was challenging, but do-able! Beware that this part of the Eurovelo 1 merges with the Fisherman's trail, which was not super busy mid-Feb but I'd imagine it would be as the weather warms up. You will be sharing this trail with lots of friendly hikers :)
