To the south of Santiago do Cacém, ruins recall the presence of the convent of Our Lady of Loreto, built in the 15th century. In addition to its historical aspect, the old stones bring during the summer a pleasant freshness which invites to the pause and the contemplation.

Erected on a round hill overlooking the picturesque village of Santiago do Cacém, the castle has watched over the surroundings since the 12th century, when the country was occupied by the Moors. Today considered a national monument, its square keeps and loopholes that encircle the walls are a reminder of its major role in history.

The castle ruins cannot be visited "normally" by the public. It contains the city's cemetery.

The Convent of Our Lady of Loreto was founded in the second half of the 15th century by D. Catarina de Noronha, wife of Pedro Pantoja, commander of Santiago do Cacém. The monastery was built on the site where there was a small hermitage, already dedicated to the patron saint. This convent complex was intended to house a Franciscan community of 12 friars whose structures were remodeled and expanded during the reign of King Manuel. A single-nave temple with four side chapels also belonged to the cloister. Little remains of the monastery as the building was sold to private individuals in 1834 after the religious orders died out, whose neglect led to progressive ruin. Some of the Manueline decorative elements are deposited in the Archaeological Museum of Sines.
