It's been almost 20 years since an attempt to dredge the Rehnaer Mühlenteich went completely wrong. In January 2007, hurricane "Kyrill" not only sank an excavator but also put the project on hold for the next few years. 19 years later, the Mühlenteich has been dredged and a footbridge built over it. Visitors to the footbridge complained about the missing railing on the land side. But Martin Reininghaus has an explanation for that: "The footbridge is officially only a service bridge for the two 40-centimeter-wide sluices in the sheet pile walls that separate the Mühlenteich from the Radegastlauf. This ensures that water can flow into the Mühlenteich and the Radegast maintains its flow rate."

Only upon reaching this monument will the passing walker or hiker realize that this is not one of the small religious monuments so often encountered. This symbol of the death of Jesus Christ, rising like a summit cross, serves instead as a war memorial. It was erected to commemorate the many victims of war and tyranny everywhere, including here, during the first half of the 20th century. Despite the considerable passage of time, such a memorial has lost none of its relevance: its constant reminder to us and all future generations to preserve peace remains the enduring message of this monument.

Start in the southeastern district of Neumühle and enjoy the peaceful lakeside walk, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The shoreline offers varied, mostly wooded and sometimes steep sections, especially on the northern shore in the Friedrichsthal Forest.

A very beautiful single trail. You'll have to endure a few nettles in the summer, but you'll be rewarded with some beautiful scenery. It's also worth stopping to admire the ancient beech trees.
