The Alatsee, located at an altitude of 868 meters, covers an area of around twelve hectares and is up to 35 meters deep. It fills a gorge-like depression north of the Falkenstein ridge. The lake is fed by groundwater, which flows eastwards via the Faulenbach into the Lech. According to rumors, towards the end of the Second World War, gold treasures of the Deutsche Reichsbank, which had previously been stored at Neuschwanstein Castle, were sunk to the bottom of the Alatsee. However, treasure hunters attracted by this never found the gold or other riches. The lake has been closed for diving since 1983.
