Stol (2236 m)

Highlight • Summit

Na njegovih travnatih vesinah, meliščih in skalnih policah raste značilna alpska flora: planika, murka, Zoisova vijolica, lepi jeglič, navadni alpski zvonček, retijski in julijskoalpski mak, brezstebelna lepnica in še mnoge druge.

Razgled s Stola je izredno širok. Na vzhodu so v bližini Belščica, Vrtača, Begunjščica in Košuta. Proti jugovzhodu vidimo Dobrčo, Kamniške Alpe, Posavsko hribovje s Kumom in Gorjance.

Veliki Vrh Summit

Highlight • Summit

Begunjščica is a mountain range in the Karavanke Mountains east of Stol. Begunjščica rises above the Draga valley north of Begunje. The steep southern slopes are up to about 1500 m wooded, in the upper part ruined and grassy. The eastern rocky edge of the mountain rises above the narrow Šentanska valley, which separates Begunjščica from Košuta. The western wooded slope below Roblekov dom descends steeply into the narrow valley of Završnica. The northern slopes from Smokuška planina to Ljubelj are rocky and precipice, and in between there are extensive screes and gutters. From the peak ridge of the mountain rise three peaks: the eastern is Begunjska Vrtača (1991 m), the middle Veliki vrh (2060 m) is the highest peak of the mountain, and the western is Srednji vrh (1979 m). The mountain is composed of Triassic limestones. Begunjščica is known for its rich flora; here also grow the long-flowered primrose, the horned violet, the beautiful shoe, the fragrant wolfberry, the pink viper, the wig-headed, the yellow heather, and the other plants. Chamois and ibex can also be seen on the rocks and on the grass shelves. Due to easy access, Begunjščica is visited throughout the year. In addition, in winter and spring, with favorable snow conditions, its screes are a ready terrain for touring skiing.

From the top there is a very nice view. In the north, below the precipice walls, there is the Zelenica valley and above it the ridges of Ljubeljščica, Na Možeh, Palca and Vrtače, and on the horizon we can see Visoke Ture with good visibility. To the east is a wide view of the Košuta, Kamnik and Savinja Alps and Peca. In the south, at the foot of the valley, is the Draga valley, to the east of it rises Dobrča, and to the west the Stol mountain range; the Gorenjska plain expands further, followed by the Škofja Loka hills, Ratitovec, Jelovica, Pokljuka and Julijci.

The stamp is in a box on Veliki vrh. PD Radovljica.

Prešeren Lodge at Stol (2174 m)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The hut stands on the sunny side just below the top of Mali Stol (2198 m). The first hut was built in 1909 by the Kranj branch of the SPD, and was ceremoniously opened on July 31, 1910. It was named after the greatest Slovenian poet, dr. France Prešeren (1800-1849), a host from Vrba pod Stolom. In 1927, the hut was enlarged, and the opening was on July 15, 1928. After the famous battle of Stol, on February 20, 1942, the partisans burned the hut so that the Germans would not have a base in it. At the initiative of the surviving fighters of the Battle of Stol, PD Javornik-Koroška Bela built a new mountain lodge on the foundations of the old hut and opened it on 21 August 1966. In 1981-1984 the hut was significantly enlarged and renovated, and the grand opening was on 4 August 1984. The hut is open from mid - June to mid - September.

Views:

Prešeren's hut stands on an extremely scenic spot. On the east side we see Vrtača, Begunjščica and Košuta; to the southeast, the view stops at the Kamnik Alps, Menina planina, the Posavje hills with Kum and Gorjanci; the whole south side is very varied, when the view walks along the Ljubljana basin and the wide Gorenjska plain, the Notranjska hills to Snežnik, across the Škofja Loka mountain range to Trnovski gozd, Porezno, Ratitovec and Jelovica, we see Kranj, Radovljica and Lake Bled, and with good visibility Ljubljana; there is a beautiful view to the southwest of Julijce with Triglav and Pokljuka and Mežakla in the foreground, if the atmosphere is clean, we can see the Dolomites in the background; we can see the Karavanke ridge, which stretches from Stol to the west with Belščica in the foreground and Kepa in the background; the view to the north obscures the nearby southern slope of Veliki Stol. From the top of Stol there is a wide view to the north of the steep slopes of the Karavanke towards the Drava valley, to the Klagenfurt basin with Klagenfurt, to the east to Obir, Peca and Svinška planina, and to the northwest to Nizke and Visoke Tur.

Moste Dam on the Sava

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

Small dam on the Sava for the hydroelectric power station in Moste. The color of the Save water looks Caribbean. The dam itself is easy to cross and looks monumentally large. On one side the road has a very high, short gradient, estimated at 22%. Be careful when crossing the dam because car traffic is allowed.

Archaeological site (prehistoric settlement). Also a very nice view of the Sava valley, Jesenice, Bled etc. Accessible via an easy hiking trail from one side or a short via ferrata from the other.

It was quite lonely here on my rainy Monday morning, so I was able to enjoy the natural power of the dammed, rushing water in peace. The continuation of the cycle path towards the Vintgar Gorge was a little difficult to find.

The Hochstuhl (obsolete Stou, Slovenian Stol) is a mountain on the border between Carinthia (Austria) and Slovenia. With a height of 2237 m, it is the highest peak in the Karawanks. Its sharp northern cliffs form an impressive valley head in the Carinthian Bärental.

October 15, 2023, Moste Hostages Memorial

Maybe a small correction. The statue of a hostage and the twenty-nine memorials along the road in the village of Moste commemorate the hostages who were brought from the Begunje prison by the Germans on 1 July 1942 and shot on that spot. The action was a response to the action of the Cankarjev Battalion, in which a few days earlier they had destroyed the railway and road bridge in the village of Moste. One of the hostages, who was a gymnast, escaped from the killing site by jumping backwards in a somersault and survived despite having his hands tied on his back and jumping into a ravine at great depth. Unfortunately, he later lost his life in battle with the German occupiers.
