Královský hrad Landštejn was founded after 1222 by the Czech King Přemysl Otakar I as a guard castle to defend the royal road and the border with Austria. In the 13th century, it came under the administration of the Vítkovci, one branch of whom is even referred to as the Lords of Landštejn. The Krajíř family was responsible for the reconstruction of the castle into a more comfortable Renaissance residence. After them, it quickly changed owners and fell into disrepair. The biggest blow was the fire in the residential part in 1771. It is now state-owned and, after extensive reconstruction, has been accessible to the public since 1990. The castle represents a unique Romanesque complex and is one of the most important monuments of its kind in Europe. The higher tower has been adapted as a viewing platform with a panoramic view of the surrounding area. During an independent tour, you can explore not only the uniquely functional architecture of the castle and the Chapel of St. George, but also the exhibition of local archaeological finds. Mapy.com
