March 10, 2026, Pilgrimage Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers on Möninger Berg

Pilgrimage Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers In 1794, farmer Ägidius Wolf brought back an image of the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and the Fourteen Holy Helpers from a pilgrimage and began building a chapel for it on Möninger Berg. He and his descendants maintained the chapel and continued to expand it for 80 years. It acquired its current Neo-Gothic form in 1884. It was consecrated on August 24, 1885. To this day, the Möninger Berg Festival, a pilgrimage to the Fourteen Holy Helpers, is celebrated annually on the last Sunday in August. The Neo-Gothic chapel consists of a nave and a recessed, three-sided apse to the west. An octagonal bell tower, topped with a pointed spire and resting on corbels, is set into the west gable and houses the bell frame. Source: www.wikipedia.de

A predecessor building probably dates back to 1496 (inscription on a stone now embedded in the gateway). In 1719, Count Christian Albrecht von Wolfstein commissioned the Nuremberg master builder Ulrich Mösel to build a new church. Consecrated in 1723, the nave was raised in 1842. Restored externally in 1987 and internally in 1988–90. The building is structured by pilaster strips with sandstone framing. The east tower has a bell dome and lantern, and a polygonal stair tower on the east side. On the tower ground floor, a basket-arched passageway with a coat of arms is featured. The portal on the west façade has been blocked off; portals on the north and south long sides feature triangular gables, coats of arms, and inscriptions. A walled-up crypt beneath the church contains eleven burials of family members of the Counts of Wolfstein. Rectangular space with a three-sided eastern end, vaulted by a barrel vault with a flat top. The ceiling's stucco paneling and the neoclassical stucco ornaments in the shield arches of the lunettes date from 1842. A large ceiling painting, The Victory of the Gospel, signed and dated 1848 by Sartorius, is surrounded by medallions of the four evangelists. Corinthian pilasters with surrounding, corbelled entablature. The liturgical centerpiece is the pulpit altar, enclosed by two massive Corinthian columns that also support the organ loft, thus substantially integrated into the spatial architecture. One of three pulpit altars in the Sulzburg district (>> Bachhausen, >> Sulzkirchen). Its architectural counterpart to the west is the lord's estate, divided by two Corinthian pillars; console galleries along the long sides of the church. – Rich stucco work on the galleries and pulpit altar by Donato Polli: above the master's gallery, a large stucco coat of arms of the Wolfstein family and of Hohenlohe-Kirchberg zu Langenburg; on the ceiling of the master's gallery, a richly sculpted scroll and scroll work with putti, cartouches, and floral garlands. It encloses three contemporary frescoes of Christological themes in bright colors. – Pulpit altar, stucco pulpit supported by angels with a parapet relief of the Annunciation; above, an organ in Art Nouveau style. – The inscription panel on the west wall with the coats of arms of the Wolfstein family and Schenk von Limpurg, dated 1609, refers to the expansion of the castle.

Architecturally, it's a very beautiful observation tower. Add to that the peace and quiet and the waterfowl. Definitely worth a visit 🥰
