Windberg Summit (Schneealpe)

Highlight • Summit

The Windberg (1,903 meters), the highest point of the Schneealmmassiv, rises no more than 30 minutes from the Schneealpenhaus. The Schneealm is located in the district of Mürzzuschlag in the province of Styria, only a small part of the massif belongs to Lower Austria. The view from the summit is sufficient in suitable weather (unfortunately I did not have that today) from the Hohe Veitsch, Hochschwab, Göller to Schneeberg and Rax. In extremely good visibility you can also guess the Gesäuse and the Dachstein massif.

Habsburghaus Mountain Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Probably the most rustic refuge on the Rax - and at the same time the most difficult to reach. Here there is not only nice hospitality with good food and good sleeping opportunities, but above all the finest sunsets in all of Vienna's local mountains!

Reisalpenhaus

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Reisalpe with its 1,398 m is one of the highest mountains in the Lower Austrian Prealps and offers the hiker a unique view. From the tree-free summit you have a clear view to all sides! To the Traunstein, Ostrong, Schneeberg, Rax, Hochschwab, Gippel, Göller over the Danube valley and on particularly clear days even up to the summits of Gesäuses.
The kitchen of the Reisalpenschutzhaus (60 seats) is run with great dedication and serves traditional dishes such as sausage and grilled dumplings or roast pork as well as seasonal dishes such as mushrooms, sheep's cheese and asparagus. Cabbage specialty par excellence is the game from the Genussregion "Lilienfelder Voralpenwild". For an overnight stay at the cabin (40 beds) a reservation is absolutely necessary.
Opening Hours: May 1 to August 31 every day except Tuesday, September and October

Türnitzer Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Simple hut, which is run on a voluntary basis by members of the St. Pölten Mountain Association. Open from early May to early November on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. When the hut is not open, there is a freely accessible winter room with two beds available. We were given a very friendly welcome. The hut is right next to the summit of the Türnitzer Höger.

The Habsburghaus is a historic and managed mountain hut of the Austrian Alpine Club at 1,785 m on the Grieskogel in the Rax, Vienna Alps, often called the “Acropolis of the Rax” due to its exposed location. From here, a wide view opens up over the surrounding peaks and plateaus, and it is a popular destination and resting point for mountain hikers and via ferrata tours of various difficulty levels. The hut offers regional cuisine, cozy lounges, and overnight accommodation in multi-bed rooms and dormitories – access is exclusively on foot via marked trails or from the Rax cable car.

The food tastes good, but apart from the pasta dishes and meat dumplings (which are very, very tasty), it is very manageable.

The terrace is great. Unfortunately, the food is less so: tasteless frozen Kaiserschmarrn for a hefty 13 euros, which sits heavily in the stomach.
