Construction and function: The tower was built in the mid-14th century. It served as one of the original two keeps of Friedberg Castle for guarding the northern access.Origin of the name: According to a source from 1766 (Friederich Carl Mader), the construction is associated with ransom money from a feud with Count Adolf of Nassau. However, the exact origin of the name is not 100% historically clarified.Architecture: The tower is referred to as a "butter churn tower". The current appearance with the four corner turrets and the pointed helmet essentially resulted from a restoration in the 1890s.Restoration: The Adolf Tower is the oldest surviving structure of Friedberg Castle, after the southern keep already collapsed in 1684.Significance: It offers a far-reaching view over the Wetterau and the Taunus.Friedberg Castle, where the tower stands, was one of the largest castle complexes in Germany and was directly subordinate to the emperor as a castle for a long time.
