The area was placed under protection on March 30, 1989, and expanded in 1997 (size approx. 138 ha). It protects the largely natural, fast-flowing stream with meanders, islands, plunge pools, cut banks and slip-off slopes, as well as adjacent wet meadows, spring areas, and forests.Flora (especially worth seeing May–July):

For centuries, the place (together with Pinnow) belonged to the noble family von Maltzahn. Pinnow was the main estate, Duckow the secondary estate. Several Maltzahn possessions along the Ostpeene formed the so-called "säben Dörper" (seven villages) – a Pomeranian exclave that was surrounded by Mecklenburg territory. In 1937, these villages moved from the district of Demmin to the Mecklenburg district of Malchin.

The Ostpeene was formed as an erosion valley during the last ice age and has cut up to 20 m deep into the surrounding ground moraine. In the process, groundwater layers were exposed, which emerge as spring areas and form rare gley soils (e.g., calcareous spring gley). Due to the steep gradient, the stream has served as a mill stream since the Middle Ages (several mills, including remains and a memorial plaque in the area; the Gielower Mühle still exists). After the Thirty Years' War, farmland lay fallow and became forested; remains of medieval ridge and furrow fields are still recognizable.

The lake is part of the "Torgelower See" landscape conservation area (approx. 3,340 ha, also includes the Tiefwarensee and the surrounding area). The protection primarily covers the glacial, park-like landscape with old oaks and beeches. The area serves as a local recreation space for Waren and is home to many endangered animal and plant species, especially water birds.

Unfortunately, it is not open to the public! The Groß Gievitz manor house is a baroque manor house situated in an idyllic park. The original building probably dates from the first half of the 18th century (around 1730), while the surviving stables were built around 1700.

The inspector's house, one of the best-preserved buildings of the former estate, was built in 1756 and remodeled in 1908. The listed building still features original stucco ceilings and parts of the wood paneling.

The landscape park of Varchentin Castle was laid out in 1838 by the Prussian garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné. The park extends to the lake and includes an artificial canal connecting the Great and Little Varchentin Lakes, which, however, has dried up due to a lowered groundwater level.
