If you’re going to the campsite try to pack light. You gain elevation pretty consistently so a good pair of hiking boots are worth it. There was a downed tree early during the cutback, we managed to get over it safely, but use caution. Park staff was notified. Trail was narrow but trekking poles helped. Definitely take your time and take breaks as needed. Don’t burn out early.

Frozen Head state park is about an hour from Knoxville, TN and offers 50 miles of trails to explore, with beautiful features and views, and a lookout tower from the top gives a mountain theater, likely all to yourself. Backcountry primitive camp sites are available, and I look forward to staying at them this fall. Camping permits are easily obtained online, or the park office. Frozen Head hosts the famous, grueling, 100 mile Barkley ultramarathon -- but you don't have to be _that_ hard core to enjoy this gem of a place, just outside town. https://tnstateparks.com/parks/campground/frozen-head

The mist was heavy, and the air cool and comfy the entire route up to the ridge top. Rainy barely came, but never enough to put on a coat. The fog muffled the sounds, and we jump a few deer along the way, which Faile was very excited about.
