The Tappenkarseehütte is located just above the lake of the same name and is an ÖAV hut. In summer, it's a popular destination, including for overnight stays. We even managed to get a spot in the camp at short notice, but it was completely full. Because it was so crowded, everything felt a bit like a mass processing operation. Unfortunately, we didn't get the famous Kaiserschmarrn in the evening either; it's only available during the day. There are few vegetarian options, and no (posted) mountaineering food.

Now that the Punschkuchl team from Tulln has taken over the hut, it is hipper, a bit more alternative and much more loving than other huts. You can go SUP, at 8 there is yoga with a view of the Hafner and the breakfast buffet is absolutely amazing.

Great hike, starting from the Aualm. The last part at the summit is a bit difficult, but with a little caution and concentration it is doable even for a flatlander like me 😉. The view at the top is unique!!!

Two of the most notable lakes are Jägersee and Tappenkarsee. The Jägersee is an idyllic mountain lake easily accessible from Kleinarl, known for its emerald-green waters and serene environment. The Tappenkar Lake is one of the largest and highest mountain lakes in the Eastern Alps, offering breathtaking views after a rewarding hike.
Yes, Jägersee offers an easy circular trail around the lake, which is suitable for strollers and takes approximately 45 minutes. For families looking for more options, Daarmoossee, Niederbergsee, and Grafenbergsee are also attractive hiking destinations.
Swimming is generally not permitted in Jägersee as it is part of a nature reserve. While the water in Tappenkar Lake is very clear, it is also very cold and has many rocks on the bank, making it less suitable for swimming.
At Jägersee, you can enjoy leisurely walks on the circular trail, rent rowing boats during summer, and stop for regional delicacies at the Gasthaus at the Jägersee. In winter, the area is popular for cross-country skiing and horse-drawn sleigh rides.
The Tappenkar Lake is only accessible on foot via a moderately challenging hike with a significant ascent. Once there, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views, pure mountain air, and clear water. There are mountain huts, the Tappenkarsee Alm and Tappenkarseehütte, offering regional specialties and a unique atmosphere.
Yes, near Jägersee, the Gasthaus at the Jägersee offers regional food and a sunny terrace. For Tappenkar Lake, the Tappenkarsee Hut and Tappenkarsee Alm provide food and accommodation for hikers, typically open from early June to mid/late September. The Rotgüldensee Hut also offers a restaurant and accommodation near Rotgüldensee.
The summer months are ideal for hiking to lakes like Tappenkar Lake, with mountain huts typically open from early June to mid/late September. Jägersee is beautiful year-round, offering boating in summer and cross-country skiing or sleigh rides in winter.
You can expect to see emerald-green or blue-black sparkling waters, surrounded by majestic mountains, steep rock faces, and magnificent alpine flora. Lakes like Jägersee are part of nature reserves, offering serene environments, while others like Tappenkar Lake provide panoramic views from high elevations.
Yes, the region also features Rupertisee, an artificially created reservoir with panoramic views, and Blauer See, a small meltwater pit considered an insider tip. Daarmoossee, Niederbergsee, and Grafenbergsee are also popular hiking destinations.
The area offers diverse outdoor activities. You can find numerous running trails, including loops around Jägersee, by exploring the Running Trails around Kleinarl guide. Visitors frequently praise the stunning natural beauty, the clear and deep waters, and the magnificent panoramic views, especially from high-altitude lakes like Tappenkar Lake. The peaceful atmosphere, opportunities for regeneration, and the welcoming mountain huts also receive high acclaim.
Jägersee is easily accessible by car, implying parking is available nearby. For Tappenkar Lake, you would typically park at the starting point of the hiking trail, as the lake itself is only reachable on foot.
