August 11, 2026, Manningaburg Castle

The Manningaburg is a historic, former moated castle in the Pewsum district of the municipality of Krummhörn in East Frisia. It originally served as the ancestral seat of the influential East Frisian chieftain family Manninga. Today, only the three-winged outer bailey (Unterburg) remains, surrounded by a wide moat (Graft). History at a Glance 1404 / 1458: First foundation walls are created. In 1458, the castle is rebuilt by the Manninga family. 1530: Expansion with a magnificently furnished upper castle and a stable. 1565: Sale by Hoyko Manninga to Count Edzard II of East Frisia and his wife Catherine of Sweden. 18th Century: Decay of the complex. The upper castle and the stable are demolished in 1716 due to dilapidation. 1954: The Krummhörn local history association acquires and restores the protected monument.

Also called Randkanal, it runs via Großefehn into the Ems. Along the canal, good cycle paths can be discovered again and again. Deutsche Fehnroute offers more such cycle paths.

Pleasant route along the dike, instead of 🚗 there are 🐑 to navigate around here. But the huts on the dikes are used to cyclists 🚴‍♂️ passing through and are not disturbed by it, so have fun & enjoy the fresh breeze
