Located in a beautiful glaciated basin, it's surrounded by towering peaks. It's quite a challenge to get here, but you will likely find more solitude here compared to Crater Lake.

From here you can head to either North Maroon Peak or Buckskin Pass. Dispersed camping is allowed, 200 feet away from the trail or water sources. There is a stream very close from here. As campfires are prohibited above 10,800 feet, this is a good place to set up camp.

The altitude here is over 12,000 feet, so be mindful of your breathing and the thinner air. You want to get here early in case of afternoon thunderstorms. You'll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Maroon Bells and Pyramid Peak.

The prime hiking season in the Elk Mountains is from late June to September. July and August offer the best conditions, with lush green landscapes and spectacular wildflower displays. Autumn, particularly late September, is also a fantastic time to visit when the extensive aspen groves turn a brilliant gold. Be aware that snow can linger at high elevations well into July and may return as early as October.
Yes, there are several options suitable for families and beginners. For a relatively flat and scenic walk, consider the Three Lakes Trail loop. This 3.4-mile (5.5 km) circular route is great for a leisurely outing. Another gentle option is the East River Trail, which offers beautiful scenery with minimal elevation gain.
For the most vibrant wildflower displays, plan your hike for July and August. During these months, the high-alpine meadows and valleys are covered in a carpet of colorful blooms. The Rustler's Gulch Trail is particularly renowned for its incredible wildflower scenery during this peak season.
Dogs are generally permitted on trails within the national forests, but they must be under voice control or on a leash. However, in the popular Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, regulations are stricter; dogs must be on a leash at all times. Always check specific regulations for the area you plan to hike and be prepared to clean up after your pet.
Many trails in the Elk Mountains are at high elevation, where the air is thinner. It's crucial to acclimatize for a day or two in towns like Aspen or Crested Butte before attempting strenuous hikes. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and listen to your body. Symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, and dizziness. If symptoms persist or worsen, descend to a lower elevation immediately.
The Elk Mountains are famous for their demanding backpacking routes. The iconic Four Pass Loop is a multi-day trek that showcases some of the best scenery in the range. For a classic point-to-point challenge, the Crested Butte to Aspen via West Maroon Trail is a strenuous 20-mile (32.6 km) hike that crosses a high mountain pass, rewarding hikers with breathtaking panoramic views.
Permits are required for overnight trips in certain high-use areas, such as the Four Pass Loop and Conundrum Hot Springs within the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. Day hiking generally does not require a permit, but reservations are often necessary for vehicle access and parking at the popular Maroon Bells Scenic Area. Always check the latest regulations with the U.S. Forest Service before your trip.
The Elk Mountains are home to a diverse range of wildlife. It's common to spot elk, mule deer, and marmots. Bighorn sheep can often be seen in rocky, high-alpine areas. While less common, black bears and mountain lions also inhabit the region, so it's important to store food properly and be aware of your surroundings. For more information on local elk populations, you can visit the National Park Service page on elk.

For a challenging but rewarding day, the American Lake Trail is a steep 5.8-mile (9.3 km) round-trip hike that leads to a beautiful lake nestled in a high-alpine basin.
