Today's castle goes back to a moated castle, for which the Krückau was dammed up to create a fortified island with moats around it. The founders were the Knights of Barmstede. From 1322 the castle came to the county of Schauenburg near Rinteln on the Weser. A bailiff ruled from here in the sense of the count these northern areas.
