Frequently Asked Questions

What are some popular places for hiking in Lebanon?

Lebanon offers several highly regarded hiking areas. The

Shouf Biosphere Reserve Barouk Cedar Forest is a must-visit, celebrated for its ancient and majestic cedar trees. For a journey through history, the Qannoubin Valley, also known as the Holy Valley, features trails that pass by ancient monasteries built into the cliffs. Another popular spot is Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve, a high-altitude park with beautiful cedar woods, while Wadi El Salib offers a more rugged experience with trails winding past historical ruins.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes in the region?

Yes, there are several options suitable for families. A great choice is the Round Valley Reservoir loop from Clinton. It's a relatively short walk of about 4.4 km that can be completed in just over an hour, making it ideal for an easy outing with children.

Can I find trails with waterfalls in Lebanon?

Absolutely. Lebanon is known for its beautiful waterfalls. While many require dedicated trips, the Lake Solitude and Waterfall loop from High Bridge is a great hike that incorporates a waterfall directly into the route. For other notable waterfalls, consider visiting areas like Baatara Gorge, Akoura, or Kfarhelda, which are famous destinations for their stunning cascades.

What is the best time of year to go hiking in Lebanon?

The best seasons for hiking in Lebanon are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild, and the landscapes are at their most vibrant, with blooming wildflowers in spring and rich colors in fall. Summer can be very hot, especially at lower altitudes, but higher elevation areas like the Shouf Biosphere Reserve or Horsh Ehden offer a cooler escape. Winter brings snow to the mountains, which is ideal for snowshoeing rather than traditional hiking.

Are there any challenging hikes for experienced hikers?

Yes, Lebanon's mountainous terrain provides plenty of challenges. For a demanding day out, consider the Round Valley Reservoir – Cushetunk Mountain loop from Fox Hollow at Lamington. This difficult trail covers nearly 18 km with significant elevation gain. For the ultimate challenge, experienced mountaineers often tackle Qornet el Sawda, Lebanon's highest peak, which offers unparalleled views.

Are dogs allowed on the hiking trails?

Policies on dogs can vary significantly between different parks and nature reserves. While some open trails might be suitable, major protected areas like the Shouf Biosphere Reserve and Tannourine Cedars Forest Nature Reserve generally do not permit dogs to protect the local wildlife. It is always best to check the specific regulations for the trail or reserve you plan to visit beforehand.

How many hiking trails are available around Lebanon?

A great moderate option is the Round Valley Reservoir – Round Valley Reservoir loop from Clinton, which is a circular route of about 10 km. Loop trails are common in nature reserves and around popular features like lakes.

What should I pack for a day hike in Lebanon?

For a day hike, you should bring plenty of water, especially in warmer months. Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, as trails can be rocky and uneven. Finally, pack some snacks or a light lunch and a small first-aid kit.
