Željezničar Mountain Lodge on Oštrc

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The most beautiful destination on the Samobor Highlands. Only maybe Japetic can be compared to Sharp. If you love nature you should not miss the Sharpener. The mountain lodge should be renovated. Great view of the city of Zagreb and Medvednica.

Ivanščica Peak (1,060 m)

Highlight • Summit

The peak of Ivanščica is located 1060 meters above the sea level. It’s called Ivanščica, too. It is the main destination of most hikers who come to visit Ivanšcica. Nearby the mountain hut "Pasarićeva kuća" there are two lookout points. From the smaller one "Stricevo" you can see big area towards north, seeing Ivanec, Varaždin and the Međiumurje region.

On the highest spot on the mountain a lookout tower shaping an iron "Pyramid" is built. It is 10 meter high. On the same spot in 1893 mountaineers from Ivanec built a small wooden pyramid and next to it a small shelter, that was predecessor of today’s modern tower and huts.

Around the hut and the tower there are several wooden benches and tables for hundreds of mountaineers.

Occupying a beautiful meadow below the summit slopes of Vučjak, the Zavižan hut makes for a great pit stop when exploring the peaks of the Northern Velebit. It acts as a weather station and is the highest continuously inhabited building in Croatia. The hut enjoys splendid views towards the Adriatic and of the Zavižan basin.

Risnjak Mountain Lodge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Risnjak Mountain Lodge (724 m above sea level) is run by the Risnjak Mountaineering Association, of which the members of the band Cinkuši are an integral part today. Risnjak is open on weekends and offers food and drinks, but also accommodation by arrangement. Due to its popularity and proximity, they should go to lunch a little earlier, because they often run out of food by 2 pm. I recommend the excellent strudels and poppy seeds, which are perhaps the best I have ever eaten in mountain lodges and restaurants.

Risnjak was built by members of the society in 1955 and has maintained the authenticity of the mountain lodge to this day. It is located on a glade called Pongračevo. In the immediate vicinity is Pongračeva lugarnica. There are no views from the home due to the dense forest, but a beautiful view of Zagreb can be seen a hundred meters below the house on trail number 9 towards Mikulići.

Klek Mountain Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Klek mountain lodge is located at 1000 m above sea level, at the foot of Klek's peak. The home is managed by HPD Klek from Ogulin, is open on weekends until 4 pm and offers drinks (without food) and accommodation by arrangement.
On the first Sunday of the calendar year, the Mountaineering New Year is traditionally celebrated here.

If you follow the educational trail from Bjelsko, it can be reached in approx. 1 h. During the ascent, you will come across an inscription inviting passers-by to take logs prepared along the trail to the mountain lodge. Just before arriving at the home, there is an inscription "Welcome to the kingdom of Klek witches" due to the legend that the top rock of Klek is a gathering place for witches on stormy nights.

Whether as a final destination or a stopover before the ascent to Klek and Klečice, this is a nice place to take a break with views of Ogulin.
