The hike leads for about a kilometer through a wild-romantic nature and gorge landscape in the Hessian Rhön (Gersfeld-Sandberg). The adventurous hiking trail goes here over small bridges and stairs along a babbling stream through the beech forest. Shortly before the upper end of the gorge, students from the Gesamtschule Gersfeld have planned and built a standing snack station - a great idea and very well implemented. Various drinks are cooled in the Feldbach and can supplement your picnic (for a fee, of course). At the highest point of the hike at approx. 800m, you have a great view from the Feldberg (Rhön), if the wind doesn't whip the low clouds over the summit. So or so, hiking friends, put on your hiking boots and head out into the wonderful nature of the Eifel.

I have walked it many times, the best thing is to walk the entire Katharinenweg. It starts at the Katharinenturm and runs up the Finstertal, along the Alps, Kleinshöhe, to the Robert Heil Turm, Kneipp Becken, Hamburger Hütte, down to the Kurpark and back to the starting point at the Katharinenturm.

The gorges in the Rhön Mountains, often called "Schluchten" or "Klammen," are characterized by unique geological formations. You'll encounter areas carved through volcanic basalt or Buntsandstein (Bunter sandstone), featuring distinctive rock formations, small waterfalls, and lush forests. For example, the Cascade Gorge showcases Buntsandstein steps and small waterfalls, while the Schwarzbach Gorge is known for its stunning basalt rock formations and moss-covered stones.
Yes, several gorges in the Rhön Mountains are suitable for families. The Schwarzbach Gorge and the Teufelsmühle (Devil’s Mill) Waterfall is explicitly noted as family-friendly, offering a visually striking experience. Additionally, the Kaskadental is also considered family-friendly, providing a beautiful route with many attractions.
The gorges offer different experiences throughout the year. They are particularly captivating after rain or snowmelt when streams carry more water, enhancing the cascades. Summer provides a pleasant, shady environment, while winter transforms them into a scenic icy wonderland with frozen waterfalls. Fixed footwear and sure-footedness are recommended due to potentially slippery paths, especially in wet or icy conditions.
Beyond the most popular ones, visitors highly appreciate the Elsbach Gorge Trail, described as wildly romantic and close to nature, offering a great hiking experience, especially during snowmelt. Another notable option is the Finstertal Gorge (Katharinenweg) near Bad Hersfeld, which is part of a longer, scenic route.
The terrain in the gorges can be varied. Paths often wind through dense forests, over wooden bridges, and alongside streams. You might encounter Buntsandstein steps, basalt rock formations, and root-covered sections. Many trails are rated as intermediate difficulty, requiring fixed footwear and sure-footedness due to potentially slippery surfaces, especially after rain.
Absolutely. The Rhön Mountains are a low mountain range formed by ancient volcanic activity, which is evident in its gorges. You can see stunning basalt rock formations, particularly in the Schwarzbach Gorge. Other gorges, like the Cascade Gorge, showcase geological erosion of Buntsandstein, creating natural steps and small waterfalls.
Visitors frequently praise the wild and romantic atmosphere, the refreshing presence of flowing water, and the unique rock formations. Many enjoy the varied forest routes, the small bridges, and the constantly changing angles that make for a feast for the eyes. The intimate, forest-shaded paths offer a pleasant escape, even in midsummer, and provide captivating photo opportunities.
