Beautiful castle, which is used as a background for bridal wear. Unfortunately, the associated café-restaurant Koetshoes also threatens to disappear.... Hopely it remains!

Oost Castle and its history Oost Castle, located on the Geul River in Valkenburg, is an ochre-colored country house with a rich history dating back to the second half of the sixteenth century. A magnificent building, it has always been owned by wealthy noble families, where high-ranking figures came and went. In its heyday in 1626, Oost Castle was a place where lavish parties were held for days and high society gathered. Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed a turbulent history of inheritances and various transfers of ownership, always within the high nobility. However, they all shared one thing: a bond and love for Oost Castle and its estates. The current appearance, including its striking color, dates from 1836. The U-shaped building features a courtyard flanked by pillars with stone lions and is surrounded by Baroque gardens that are freely accessible. Over the centuries, the castle has served various purposes, including an agricultural school and a literary center. From 1978 onwards, the castle's ground floor experienced a new revival thanks to the municipality of Valkenburg itself, when they decided to build a "romantic wedding palace" there. The first bride and groom exchanged their vows there on August 26, 1978. In 2023, Ramona Koonings, owner of the world's largest bridal boutique, was given the opportunity to bid for the sale of Kasteel Oost. With a comprehensive and lovingly developed total concept for this unique building, she won the bid and became the owner of Kasteel Oost in 2024. With a total area of 34,527 m², the estate now offers a fairytale experience for visitors from Valkenburg and far beyond. Featuring a hotel, restaurant, wellness center, event venue, bridal boutique, and men's boutique, Kasteel Oost is a place where tourists, guests, businesses, future brides and grooms, and families are welcomed and inspired. The "Gemeentegrot" (Community Cave) is located at the foot of the Cauberg hill, and its tunnels extend for up to 50 km. Evidence suggests that the Romans began quarrying marlstone here. It can be visited by train or on foot. The Christmas market is one of the largest underground markets in Europe and well worth seeing.

Along the rippling Geul River, an impressive marlstone wall rises, a silent witness to Limburg's underground landscape. These calcareous rocks were used for centuries for construction and crafts and now offer a fascinating sight for hikers and nature lovers. The wall forms a natural boundary along the water and, in some places, harbors small caves and niches where flora and fauna have found a home. The contrast of the white marl against the green foliage and the glistening water of the Geul makes this a particularly photogenic and tranquil spot during your walk.
