St. Michael's Church in Rohr is considered the oldest church in Thuringia. It was built as the church of a Benedictine monastery between 815 and 824. The monastery was a branch of the large imperial abbey in Fulda. Since the monastery ceased to exist around 900, it served as an imperial palace in the 10th century, a function it maintained until the beginning of the 11th century. A significant event was the return of the abducted Otto III by Henry the Quarrelsome to the empresses Adelaide and Theophanu in 984. In the Late Middle Ages, the complex was surrounded by a ring wall, thus becoming a fortified church. Only after the Reformation did the church become a Protestant village church. Building Description In Carolingian times, a hall church with a transept was built. The crypt, typologically a hybrid of hall and ambulatory, was constructed either with the initial building or somewhat later. This church has since housed the oldest crypt in Central Germany. It already belonged to the Benedictine convent that was destroyed by Hungarian hordes in 915.[1] During the Gothic period, the windows were bricked up and new, larger ones were added. After the Middle Ages, the transept's side arms were demolished and the crypt filled in, only to be rediscovered after 1900. A very scenic bike path with all kinds of terrain. There are some moderate climbs at times. Unfortunately, the path isn't well-signposted (with shops and refreshment stops), so always pack some snacks.

There are always beautiful stone bridges over the Werra. Often, there are brief information about the bridge along the side.
