The building is currently (2026) being renovated on the outside. Therefore, there is not much to see at the moment apart from scaffolding. After the renovation, however, it will surely shine in new splendor.

"It is harmful or even dangerous for girls to receive the same education as boys. This goes against female nature. And especially if this happens in a public school." This was the prevailing opinion well into the 19th century. Despite some resistance, theology student Carl Oltrogge successfully petitioned the Lüneburg city council in 1830 to establish a girls' school—a courageous and revolutionary step for the time. The school opened in 1831 on Sande Street, but had to relocate in 1834 due to lack of space, and by 1875 it was too small again. The recently vacated Johanneum building provided space for the now over 200 students. In the same year, at Oltrogge's request, the city of Lüneburg assumed sponsorship of the now renowned "Higher School for Girls." By the end of the century, the school, with 465 students, was completely overcrowded and had to move once more. This time, a new, highly prestigious building was erected, which, together with the neighboring Graalsstift, was intended to mark the official beginning of the planned southern expansion of the city. The "Rotes Feld" (Red Field) development area was opened. In 1908, the new school opened and was named after the writer Wilhelm Raabe. In 1970, a further extension had to be built to house the science departments. Since the 1971/72 school year, the girls' grammar school has been a co-educational grammar school. Today, over 1,000 young people attend this grammar school. Source: https://www.lustauflueneburg.de/wilhelm-raabe-schule/#gsc.tab=0
