Historic Highway 395

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

This stretch of historic highway once helped link Canada, the U.S. and Mexico together in a north-south route. It also served an important role in World War II, linking San Diego's Navy base with nearby weapons depots.

Nowadays it's a more scenic alternative to nearby I-15, although there are designated bike lanes along only part of its length. The rest of the time, you'll be riding directly in the road.

Quiet stretch of country road with airport landing strip in the canyon wash, not something you typically see around here...

Old Highway 395 was once a significant roadway through what is now considered Southwest Riverside. The route entered Temecula heading over to Old Town, up Front Street onto Jefferson Street, then jogged left at Ivy Street through Murrieta, and continued north into Wildomar and Lake Elsinore. In the mid 1900s, the highway shifted east through Menifee and Perris Valley. The Historic Highway 395 Corridor identifies the 16-mile stretch from Temecula northward to Lake Elsinore along the west side of the 15 Freeway.
