This is a very interesting structure. For most of the 20th century, the Raisionjoki was heavily dammed to supply raw drinking water to the local municipalities of Raisio and Naantali. When the water intake source shifted elsewhere in 2011, the dams became obsolete but remained severe barriers, preventing migratory fish from swimming upstream to spawn. The fish ladders, which often are a combination of technical concrete steps and natural, rock-ramp rapids, bypass or replace these old dams. They slow down water speed and split steep drops into manageable steps, creating artificial waterfalls and resting pools that mimic nature. This tricks migratory species (like sea trout) into easily "climbing" upstream.
