Dahmeshöved Lighthouse The old lighthouse has been defying the sometimes harsh coastal climate for decades. It stands on a coastal headland halfway between Fehmarn and Travemünde and serves as a navigational beacon for shipping in the Mecklenburg and Lübeck Bights. The 28.8-meter-high, octagonal brick tower was built in 1878/79 on a rise in the terrain ("Höved") near the present-day Baltic Sea resort of Dahme, according to plans by Veitmeier from Berlin. The height of the light above sea level is a stately 33.7 meters. In 1890, the lighthouse was equipped with a kerosene incandescent lamp. Passing ships could spot it from more than 14 nautical miles away, even under kerosene light. During wartime, it served as an observation platform for air traffic control. Since 1925, the lighthouse has shone with a 220-volt/300-watt lamp and a backup liquid gas lamp. In 1939, a small brick tower was erected next to the Dahmeshöved lighthouse, from which the lighthouse keepers monitored visibility conditions. As soon as visibility deteriorated due to fog, snow, or rain, acoustic identification signals were deployed by air fog sound systems on the cliff. An automatic measuring device has controlled the operation of the foghorn since 1957. Today, a forward buoy with the East top mark "Dahmeshöved O" warns of the shallows in the area of the headland. Since 1978, the Dahmeshöved lighthouse has been operating fully automated via radio remote control. During the period of German division, the lighthouse in Dahmeshöved had a special significance. It served as a point of orientation for GDR citizens during escapes across the Baltic Sea, as the so-called "light of freedom".

In Kellenhusen, you will mostly find a fine-sandy main beach, but the water is often pebbly. For a real, natural stone beach, it is best to hike north towards Klostersee (Kellenhusener Forst). There you will find plenty of stones, flints, and fossils.
