Alone if only with knee and elbow pads, the more protection the better. At the steepest point with the wire rope I put a nice hole in my knee while trying to push down. So for people who are at the level where they can ride over gravel paths without fear, it's better to avoid the trail, even if, as others have written, it is very beautiful.
