As in probably every other profession, there are also a few so-called "black sheep" among the many honorable millers in the milling trade. In his book "The Flight to Egypt," the popular children's author Otfried Preußler recounts the following short episode: "And they didn't even make it all the way to Klostergrätz that evening, but a mill lay along their path, the Kloster Mill – and there they stayed until the next morning. At first, the miller was almost struck dumb when the Imperial and Royal Gendarmerie suddenly knocked on his door: Apparently, there had been some disputes with a customer last week over a few sacks of grain, which had inexplicably disappeared from his mill […] but it could have been that he was reported for it anyway – and now they were coming to get him… Naturally, all the disputed sacks of grain immediately fell from the miller's mind, as [Sergeant] Hawlitschek simply asked for lodging for the night."

The Bosbaan, built in 1937, is the oldest artificial rowing course in the world and a popular place for rowing training and competitions. From the shore near the restaurant you can often see rowers training hard or competing here. Follow the paths along the water to experience the activity up close, or walk further into the Amsterdamse Bos for a peaceful walk through nature.

The Molen van Sloten is a polder mill in the village of Sloten near Amsterdam (Akersluis 10). It is a thatched, octagonal post mill made of oak on a stone base. The windmill is located on the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeerpolder and, together with the Akergemaal, drains the western garden cities. The Molen van Sloten was built in 1991 using an 1847 ship's hull from the Watergraafsmeer, which was placed on a new brick base. The cap and sails were also made new. The Molen van Sloten is one of the few in the Netherlands that is open to the public (almost) every day. The mill also has an elevator and is used as a wedding location for the Nieuw-West district. In the mill there is a lot to see about mill technology and the history of Sloten and Oud Osdorp, but also a Rembrandt presentation in the attic with wax figures of Rembrandt and some of his characters. In April 2005, the complex was expanded to include a cooperage museum, where there is a lot to see about the old craft of cooperage. The Cooper Museum was closed and cleared in 2020. In April 2018, the De 7 Deugden brewery opened next to the mill. Because the mill is open (almost) every day all year round and is located near Schiphol Airport, it is a popular destination for many foreign tourists who want to visit a working mill near Amsterdam. The mill is a ten-minute walk from the terminus of tram line 2 in Nieuw Sloten. Bus line 195 (Connexxion) stops directly at the mill.
