The park's namesake, Castle Rock, offers stunning panoramic views, making it a popular spot for photography and hiking. This is one of the most beautiful areas along the Rock River. According to legend, Chief Black Hawk asked his captors to take care of the land due and protect its beauty. A statue of an American Indian stands on the hillside as a tribute to the former caretakers of the land. The park has heaps of activities to enjoy – camping, canoeing, cross-country skiing and boating. There's lots of hiking trails to explore too.

This small state park on the edge of the Rock River, is not to be confused with that of California. There is indeed a Castle Rock State Park in the state of California. There are neither the same geological formations nor the same vegetation here.

Grand Detour has two attractions: you are in the city where the John Deere blacksmiths originated. The museum where you can see blacksmithing demonstrations is worth a visit. On the other side of the bank is the Nachussa Grassland where herds of bison are observable.

The small town of Oregon located on the banks of the Rock River is dynamic. It organises beautiful autumn festivals every year. Located slightly to the north up the river you will find the Lowden State Park. A wooded place with a little wild life, where the monumental statue of Chief Black Hawk can be seen. The artist who sculpted this statue wanted to pay tribute to the Sauk leader Black Hawk. This chief was made famous during his captivity. He wrote his biography with the help of an interpreter, and it becames a best seller. If you are interested in the book, after seeing the statue, get "Warlord".
