Tips from the Community

Marius
May 23, 2025, Forest surrounding Panola Mountain

Only 15 minutes outside Atlanta, Panola Mountain State Park offers something for everyone. Kids can run wild on the playground while adults take in a quiet picnic. There’s space for archery, birdwatching, even geocaching. Paved trails welcome cyclists and dog walkers; forest paths invite hikers and runners. The granite outcrop, smaller and more untouched than Stone Mountain, reveals rare plant life best seen on a guided tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there many easy, family-friendly hikes in Henry County?

Yes, Henry County is well-suited for family outings. Most of the trails in the area are rated as easy, featuring paved paths or gentle terrain. For a straightforward walk, consider the Lake Horton Park loop, which is a relatively flat path around a lake. Another excellent choice is Heritage Park in McDonough, which offers a paved walking track alongside a replica 1820s village that can be fun for all ages.

Can I bring my dog on the hiking trails?

Many parks in Henry County are dog-friendly, but policies can vary. Clark Community Park in Stockbridge is a great option as it features a dedicated bark park for off-leash fun in addition to its .7-mile paved trail where dogs must be leashed. Always check the specific park's regulations before you go, and remember to keep your dog on a leash on trails and clean up after them.

Are there any circular or loop trails available?

Absolutely. Loop trails are common in the area, allowing you to enjoy a continuous journey without backtracking. The Cascade Trail loop is a popular choice that takes you through the varied landscape of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. Many local parks, like Bud Kelley Park, also feature loop tracks for walking and jogging.

What are some good places to see wildlife or learn about nature?

For a unique experience, visit the Dauset Trails Nature Center. It's a highly-regarded local favorite that features rescued native animals and extensive trails through forests and by a serene pond. Another great spot is the Newlands Wetland Center in Hampton, which has a raised boardwalk and interpretative signs explaining the local ecosystem.

Are there any hiking trails with waterfalls in Henry County?

While Henry County's terrain is more known for rolling hills and granite outcrops, nearby High Falls State Park is a popular destination centered around the Towaliga River's cascading waterfalls. The park offers several trails that provide excellent views of the falls and are a short drive away for a day trip.

How should I get to the trailheads? Is parking available?

Most parks and trailheads in Henry County are best accessed by car. Parks like Panola Mountain State Park, Heritage Park, and Bud Kelley Park have designated parking areas for visitors. For example, the Reeves Creek Trail has a convenient entrance with parking on Flippen Road. Public transport options are limited for reaching most trail systems.

What should I pack for a day hike in the area?

For a day hike in Henry County, comfortable walking shoes are a must. The weather can be warm and humid, so bring plenty of water. Sunscreen and a hat are recommended, especially for trails with less tree cover like those on Arabia Mountain. Some trails, like Reeves Creek Trail, are known for insects during certain seasons, so packing insect repellent is a wise precaution.

Are the trails in Henry County free to access?

Many of the county and city parks, such as Heritage Park, Reeves Creek Trail, and Clark Community Park, offer free access to their walking and hiking trails. However, state parks like Panola Mountain State Park typically require a daily parking fee or an annual park pass for entry. It's always a good idea to check the specific park's website for the most current fee information.

What are some good trails for beginners?

Henry County has numerous options perfect for beginners. The trails at Clark Community Park and Alexander Park are paved and relatively short, making them ideal for a first-time hike or a gentle walk. For a slightly more natural surface that's still easy, the Morgan Grove Nature Area loop offers a short, pleasant walk through a conservation area.

What do other hikers think of the trails in Henry County?

The routes in Henry County are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Hikers often praise the peaceful, scenic atmosphere and the well-maintained trails, particularly within Panola Mountain State Park, which is often described as a perfect place to get outside and recharge.

How does Panola Mountain compare to Arabia Mountain for hiking?

Both offer unique granite monadnock experiences. Panola Mountain is a designated National Natural Landmark and access to the mountain itself is restricted to guided hikes to preserve its pristine ecosystem, though many trails circle its base. Arabia Mountain allows more open exploration on its rock outcrop, with trails like the Arabia Mountain Peak loop offering expansive views from the summit.

Where can I find more information about all the parks in the county?

For a comprehensive overview of all the parks, their amenities, and any specific rules or opening hours, the official Henry County government website is the best resource. You can find more details on their parks page at henrycountyga.gov.
