Castello Aragonese – Historic viewpoint above the Adriatic Sea The Castello Aragonese is the impressive northern starting point of the Costa dei Trabocchi. This 15th-century fortress stands high on a steep cliff and offers you a magnificent view over the Adriatic Sea, the port of Ortona, and the coastline of the Via Verde dei Trabocchi. The massive round towers and thick fortress walls are reminiscent of a turbulent past. The castle withstood heavy fighting during World War II, after which part of the complex was lost. As if that were not enough, in 1946, a landslide caused almost half of the fortress to disappear into the sea. Today, it is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Ortona and an ideal stop during your cycling or hiking tour. The castle ruins and inner courtyard are freely accessible. A short, steep climb awaits from the port, but it is amply rewarded with beautiful panoramas. Around the castle, you will also find cozy terraces and shady benches to catch your breath.

Flat and car-free: The route is laid out on a former railway line directly on the Adriatic Sea. It is fully asphalted, flat, and 100% car-free, making it perfect for any type of cyclist (from road cyclists to families).Unique setting: You cycle right past the iconic trabocchi: wooden, spider-like fishing platforms that hover over the waves. At many of these platforms, you can stop nowadays for a unique lunch or dinner with fresh fish.

Grotta-Sacrario di Bocca di Valle – Stillness and history at the foot of the Majella ⛰️ Hidden among the forests at the foot of the Majella mountains lies the impressive Sacrario di Bocca di Valle. This special war memorial is carved into the limestone of the mountain and pays tribute to the Abruzzese soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. The artificial cave with its monumental arches exudes a special tranquility. Inside, you will find the tomb of Andrea Bafile, a national war hero, and beautiful majolica panels by the famous artists Basilio and Tommaso Cascella, made up of hundreds of hand-painted ceramic tiles. Besides being a place full of history, it is also a beautiful starting point for walks through the cool beech forest, including the route to the spectacular Cascate di San Giovanni. A hidden gem where nature, art, and remembrance come together.

The inhabitants of Abruzzo and the neighboring region of Lazio have their own local observation related to this Passo Lanciano. When the sun sets in the spring behind the mighty Majella massif, it quickly gets dark on the Abruzzo side (i.e., where Passo Lanciano is located) and dusk falls, while on the other side of the mountains, in Lazio, it is still bright daylight. Locals joke that at the same moment, one half of Italy goes to sleep, and the other goes for an aperitivo.

The location is very beautiful, and the panoramic view offers a fantastic panorama. There's also an illustrative photo mentioning the names of the peaks in front of you. There's also a drinking fountain.

Built in the Middle Ages, this gateway is one of the main entrances to the ancient village. On one of its sides, you can read a verse by Gabriele D'Annunzio, which reads: "The city of stone, shone in the clear of May."
