An Argentona
May 14, 2026, View of La Fortaleza de Chipude

La Fortaleza de Chipude is a huge volcanic formation located in the west-central part of La Gomera and one of the most impressive and symbolic places on the entire island. Its silhouette stands out from many points because it has a very flat and elevated summit, almost like a gigantic rock table emerging above the ravines. Although many people think it could be a complete volcano, it is actually an ancient volcanic dome and one of the great geological monuments of La Gomera. In addition to its scenic importance, La Fortaleza had enormous historical and spiritual value for the ancient inhabitants of La Gomera before the Castilian conquest. It is believed to have been used as a ceremonial site and natural refuge due to its dominant position and difficult access. Even today, it retains a certain mysterious and isolated atmosphere, especially when fog surrounds the upper part. From the top, the views are spectacular, with deep ravines in all directions and enormous panoramas over a large part of the island. The final ascent is usually done on foot and is well worth the effort. Seen from afar, its flat and abrupt shape almost resembles an impossible mountain placed in the middle of the volcanic landscape of La Gomera.

A beautiful photo opportunity at a "lost place"—it's always surprising how a house was built here in the middle of nowhere (okay, there must have been water). This gives you an idea of how arduous life used to be (but perhaps happier in nature).

Are there any beginner-friendly mountaineering routes on the island?

While most routes are moderate to difficult, there is at least one easier mountaineering route available. For those looking for a gentle introduction to the island's terrain, consider exploring options that focus on less steep ascents and well-maintained paths, often found within the lower sections of Garajonay National Park.

What kind of terrain can I expect on Isla De La Gomera's mountaineering routes?

You can expect a highly diverse and rugged volcanic landscape. Routes traverse dramatic ravines, deep gorges, and imposing steep slopes. You'll encounter ancient laurel forests, especially within Garajonay National Park, and striking volcanic rock formations like Los Roques. The island features a stark contrast between lush, green northern areas and more arid, wild romantic southern parts.

Are there any circular mountaineering routes in Isla De La Gomera?

Yes, many mountaineering routes on Isla De La Gomera are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end in the same location. Examples include the Roque Argando loop from La Gomera, the Solitary Tree on Rocky Cliff loop from Charco del Cieno, and the Dangerous Rockfall loop from Vallehermoso.

What notable landmarks or natural features can I see along the mountaineering routes?

Isla De La Gomera's routes offer stunning natural sights. Other notable features include the Fortaleza of Chipude and various viewpoints (miradores) offering breathtaking vistas.

Are there any waterfalls accessible from the mountaineering trails?

While the island is known for its dramatic landscapes, there are indeed waterfalls to discover.
