the Gave d'Aspe this a mountain river that carves its way through the Pyrenees before eventually merging with the Gave d'Ossau down below. It's the ultimate spot along the trail to splash some cold mountain water on your face.

Sitting right at 1,754 meters on the Spanish side of the border, Lake Estanés (Ibón de Estanés) is a total Pyrenean classic. Grassy basin at the foot of towering, rugged limestone peaks, this spot feels completely timeless the second you step down to the shore. Also it's a local favorite and literally never disappoints!

Pyrénées National Park (Parc national des Pyrénées), the Échelle de la Mine (literally the "Mine Ladder") Located right along the border zone between France and Spain, this area was historically linked to old mining operations where workers had to navigate steep, rock-cut passes and ledges to haul out iron and zinc. Today, it serves as a thrilling, sky-high gateway for hikers exploring the wild high-altitude trails connecting the French Vallée d'Aspe with the Spanish side.

Passing by this little Pyrenean alpine hut, you'll notice it's totally locked up tight with heavy metal doors and window shutters. Since this trail is super popular with day hikers heading up to the lake just above, the local had to board it up to protect it from vandalism and litter.

In the valley along the Ruisseau de Couecq, just below the higher slopes of Cabane de la Caillabère, you’ll bump into classic shepherd huts like Cabane Grosse (1,623 m) and the neighboring Cabane d'Atsout. Sitting right beside the stream, this is where local shepherds bring their herds up to graze during the summer estives. Peaceful slice of Pyrenean mountain life!

Smooth trails and big sky vibes. Connecting the high pastures above the Aspe Valley, Col de Lapachouaou (around 1,890 m) is one of those sweet, easygoing mountain passes that just lets you glide along and enjoy the scenery.

Perched high up in the Aspe Valley, the newly renovated refuge (it just reopened in 2023!) is clean, functional, and run by a super friendly young crew with great vibes. Everything here runs on pure mountain energy. All the supplies are brought up and waste taken down by hard-working donkeys that march up the trails with total dignity. Don't expect a hot shower when you get to the top, though! You'll be freshening up old-school at the outdoor fountain, but you can instantly offset the cold water with some seriously delicious, hot food. Just remember to bring cash since card readers don't work up here in the clouds, and brush up on a little French or Spanish to chat with the crew.
